Hi, Captain Argentina!
What a great expatriating experience you had. I also lived abroad in 4 countries and we were always well welcomed, but I wonder if it was because of my husband's job as a pilot.
I see a change today in Italy as well. Once, Italians were always so open-arms welcoming every foreigner with a mixture of curiosity and pride for having been chosen as the best country around to settle for a new life. But recently, in these last 20 years, since Albanians and Africans started to arrive from the sea, people began worrying in many ways.
I wonder if they would have reacted the same if media wouldn't have highlighted the large number of continuous arrivals. Sometimes, ignorance is a bliss indeed.
Anyway, now it's harder for immigrants to be welcomed as it was in the old days. It's a pity when you think that even 100000 arriving people are just a drop in a 60 million population! And many won't even stay long because they continue their journey to rejoin their families in other European countries!
Your story is very instructing and reminding to all how important it is to kindly welcome and support new comers because it's the most efficient and humane way to facilitate their integration in the social structure, preventing immigrants' ghettoization and all that relate.
Thank you for sharing!
