It sounds dreadful beginning an article by listing cold statistics related to breast cancer. Even worse and more painful, when we realize that these numbers refer to real people, women and even men that got and get sick by the second.

Sometimes, though, to be helpful and constructive, we need to be tough and confront with the factuality of a problem. And numbers are facts.

Breast cancer numbers in Italy

Last September, in Rome, the 2019 annual report “The numbers of cancer in Italy” was presented in the auditorium of the Italian Ministry of Health. Following, you can read part of the reported numbers and statistics, related to breast cancer, in Italy.

For this ending year, it is estimated that in my country, about 53 thousand new cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed among women and, about 500, among men. I won’t say “merely” 500 because even one is too many, meaning that a person is victim of this illness.

By far, breast cancer is the most widespread tumor, among women. In Italy, about 800 thousand women have or had it.
